Fleurieu Region Circular Business Program: CHARLIE & JACK
Achieving circularity through continuous improvement and the implementation of sustainable practices across all business areas.
CHARLIE & JACK, an indoor plant and gift store based in Victor Harbor, has been serving the local community for more than six years.
In 2023–24, CHARLIE & JACK engaged in Business Victor Harbor’s Fleurieu Region Circular Business Program.
Objectives
The primary goal of CHARLIE & JACK's participation in the program was to reduce waste, enhance sustainability practices, and implement positive changes that would benefit both the environment and the local community of Victor Harbor.
The importance of sustainability
Sustainability initiatives are not only crucial for minimising environmental impact but also for ensuring long-term viability and competitiveness. CHARLIE & JACK aimed to become more energy and cost-effective while also contributing to the well-being of the plant community and the broader local community.
Program outcomes
Through the program, CHARLIE & JACK underwent a significant transformation in mindset and business practices, shifting towards a circular economy model. Rather than solely focusing on recycling, the business embraced strategies such as maintenance, repair, and remanufacturing to extend the lifespan of materials. Additionally, the business identified and eliminated the use of soft plastic packaging for potting mix, opting for environmentally friendly alternatives provided by local suppliers.
What’s next?
Looking ahead, CHARLIE & JACK is committed to further sustainability efforts. The business is currently exploring the implementation of solar energy to power its operations, thereby reducing reliance on conventional energy sources. Additionally, efforts are underway to devise a solution for recycling the nutrient-rich water generated as a by-product of the business.
Conclusion
CHARLIE & JACK's participation in the Fleurieu Region Circular Business Program has not only led to immediate improvements in waste reduction and sustainability, but has also set a precedent for ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility. By embracing innovative solutions and fostering partnerships within the local community, CHARLIE & JACK demonstrates that sustainable business practices are not only achievable but also integral to long-term success and community well-being.
About the Fleurieu Region Circular Business Program
Business Victor Harbor’s inaugural Fleurieu Region Circular Business Program was funded by Green Industries SA and delivered by Rawtec.
The program supported 5 businesses local to the region to move to more circular practices.
Over a 12-month period, participating businesses attended a series of workshops where they learnt about the principles of the circular economy, and created an action plan on how they could apply these to their business.
