The Precinct Resource Recovery Program will support small to medium businesses privately contracting waste collection services to take a collaborative, precinct-based approaches to procuring cost-competitive waste collections, in an effort to minimise collective waste management costs, and increase resource recovery.
Expressions of interest are sought to participate in the program. Up to 5 precincts of between 7 to 20 businesses will be selected to undertake the trial program.
What support is available?
Waste management experts will support precincts to:
- engage and educate staff on waste avoidance practices that divert materials to highest value uses
- develop an action plan for the precinct’s waste management arrangements
- implement better-practice waste collection systems for precincts to support increased resource recovery
- seek competitive tenders for consolidated, private waste collection through procurement and contract advice.
Who can apply?
- Local government
- Shopping centre management groups
- Property or facility managers
- Main street and trader associations
- Food retailers in a defined precinct
- Hospitality businesses in a defined precinct
What will we support?
The program will support trials that will take place in a defined precinct where:
- there are no less than 7 and no more than 20 participating retailers
- businesses (or property managers) have control over waste management within the precinct and will share invoicing and waste management data
- source separation of recyclables, including organic waste, and consolidated waste management between businesses is feasible
- commercial segregated organics collection services are available (Metropolitan Adelaide and selected regional)
- materials collected through commercial organics collections are destined for commercial composting activities to produce soil improvement products for market.
