Food Waste Strategy launched

Today our strategy on how all South Australians can reduce food waste has been launched. This strategy is a first for Australia. Addressing food waste is a large part of a biological circular economy. This strategy outlines how we can prevent food waste before it occurs.
Fast Facts about Food Waste:
- In South Australia, food waste makes up approximately 22% by weight of total household waste collected at kerbside and up to 40% of material presented in household waste bins
- About 26% of commercial and industrial waste streams is food waste
- Diverting organics from landfill lowers landfill costs to councils
- Reducing food waste through composting supports local industry and jobs
- Reducing food waste by composting reduces greenhouse gas emissions
The South Australian Government has an aim to reduce emissions by more than 50% from 2005 levels by 2030, and for net zero emissions by 2050. Taking action to address the generation of food waste and divert this material away from landfill helps implement the government’s policy directions under Directions for a Climate Smart SA and the across agency Climate Change Action Plan 2021-2025
